Job Description:

Would you like to make a difference in the life of a youth? Would you like to help a struggling youth become a productive member of society? Juvenile Corrections Officers are responsible for supervising, maintaining discipline and control of juvenile offenders; counseling with offenders to ensure compliance with the behavior management system and assisting with their needs.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Implements policies, procedures and techniques to ensure public safety, security and control of juvenile offenders.
- Maintains order ensuring sight and sound supervision of offenders. Inspects living units to locate contraband and to report on conditions affecting the health and safety of offenders. Frequently checks on offenders deemed to be special risks or who are on security status; reports critical conditions and incidents to appropriate authorities.
- Responds to facility/unit emergency and crisis situations utilizing the appropriate contingency plans. When necessary, physically restrains youth using approved physical intervention techniques.
- Instructs youth in personal hygiene, social skills and acceptable methods of detail cleaning so that youth residents may acquire essential life skills.
- Control items of a security nature such as radios, tools, locks, keys, mechanical restraints, medical equipment and medication. Observe physical facility for deviations from normal, which might indicate drugs or weapons being manufactured, imported or hidden within the facility.
- Observes, records and reports health symptoms, behavior and other significant problems of youth residents.
- Responsible for conducting institutional counts and tabulating numbers to ensure accuracy of youth resident population.
- Transports or escorts offenders to and from various activities.
- Writes, reviews and communicates necessary reports during shift.

Key Requirements:
- You must meet the minimum requirements for the Juvenile Corrections Officer classification (See "Minimum Requirements" below)
- You will be subject to a background check
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Possess a valid driver¿s license
- Possess a high school diploma or GED
- Be free of any felony convictions
- Take and pass a post offer work screen
- You will be subject to a drug screen
Minimum Requirements:
Candidates must have reached their 21st birthday at the time of appointment; be free of felony conviction; and take and pass a drug test approved by the Division of Personnel Services prior to being appointed to this position unless promoting, transferring, or demoting from another designated position within the Kansas Juvenile Justice Authority. Some positions in this class require that, at the time of appointment, the candidate possess a valid license.
