Job Description:

Job Description: This position is responsible for the supervision of male offenders in a correctional industries environment at the Norton Correctional Facility.  This position oversees the refurbishing of small appliances such as Bunn Slushy Machines. This includes inspecting, testing, cleaning, electrical wiring, small appliance HVAC repairs and mechanical repairs, re-testing, quality inspections of completed machines and packaging of machines for shipment. Monitoring and following up to ensure safe and productive work practices are being utilized by assigned workers.  A secondary mission is to teach assigned offender workers appropriate interaction with others, problem solving, communication skills and work ethics.  The ultimate goal is for assigned inmates to learn and develop job skills and work ethics that prepare them for reentry into society as productive and law abiding members. Responsible for the issuance and return of all tools and equipment, ensuring the security and safety of inmates supervised. Responsible for maintaining a strict safety training program for the offender crew to help reduce accidents. Responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of all tools and machinery. This job may also require supervision of the Fulfillment program also located at Norton.

Pay: Salary range: $32,760 – $42,000

Minimum Requirements: Six month of experience in the type of industry to be managed. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.

Minimum Competencies: Applicant will be able to interact with customers, co-workers, inmates and outside personnel to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Necessary Qualifications: Must be able to perform the essential physical functions of the position. Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Necessary Special Requirements: Some positions require that at the time of appointment the selected candidate must take and pass a drug-screening test approved by the Division of Personnel Services unless the incumbent is moving from one safety-sensitive position to another safety-sensitive position within the same agency performing substantially similar duties.

Selection Process:  Applicants selected for interview will be evaluated by an interview panel using performance/behavior based interview questions, and possibly a performance or written test. The interview panel will make recommendations to the Warden for final approval.  A second interview may be conducted.  Applicants will be subject to background check and criminal history investigation; must pass a drug screen and a TB test unless promoting, transferring, or demoting from another safety sensitive position within the same agency.

Veteran Preference Eligible (VPE):  This position is eligible for veterans’ preference.  Interested veterans must submit a DD 214 to the Department of Administration to be verified as a veteran under K.S.A. 73-201 prior to the vacancy close date.  Verified veterans who meet the selection criteria for this position will be invited for an interview.
