Job Description:

Job Duty Description:    This is highly skilled mechanical work. This position is responsible for maintaining the vehicle fleet to ensure safe, reliable operations.  This fleet includes but not limited to; bulldozer, road trader, dump trucks busses, farm tractors, lawn mowers, state automobiles, bucket truck, fork lifts, etc.  Responsible for diagnosing difficult performance problems and improvising replacement, assembly, repair, and troubleshooting techniques when standard procedures do not suffice, and maintaining and repairing a variety of light, medium, and heavy duty equipment. 

 

Minimum Qualifications:  One year of experience in automotive and/or diesel mechanics to meet the needs of the agency.  Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.

Performance Standards:  Performs full range of overhaul and repair work on light, medium, and heavy duty vehicles.  Makes diagnoses of mechanical failure by use of specialized testing equipment such as engine analyzers, compression testers, pressure gauges, voltmeters, etc.  Insures shop safety rules are followed and all shop equipment is kept clean and in good working condition.  Performs inspection of agency equipment and reports the condition of the equipment and any deviations from the standards and procedures of the equipment maintenance program.  Enforces inmate rules and regulations.   To be successful, the expectation is that a candidate will be able to competently perform the routine tasks of the position with limited supervision by the end of the probation period.

Selection Process:  Applicants selected for interview will be evaluated by an interview panel using performance/behavior based interview questions. The interview panel will make recommendations to the Warden for final approval.  A second interview may be conducted.  Applicants will be subject to background check and criminal history investigation; must pass a drug screen and a TB test unless promoting, transferring, or demoting from another safety sensitive position within the same agency; and possess a valid Driver’s License.

 

Veteran Preference Eligible (VPE):  This position is eligible for veterans’ preference.  Interested veterans must submit a DD-214 to the Department of Administration to be verified as a veteran under K.S.A. 73-201 prior to the vacancy close date.  Verified veterans who meet the selection criteria for this position will be invited for an interview.
