DEFINITION OF WORK

Summary

This is work operating a variety of laundry equipment.

Standard Classification Factors

Supervision Received - LEVEL B: "Under general supervision…" Employees working under general supervision usually receive some instructions with respect to the details of most assignments but are free to develop their own work sequences within established procedures, methods and policies. They are often physically removed from their supervisor and subject to only periodic checks.

Difficulty - LEVEL A: Routine… Where the work is usually repetitive and the employee works from detailed instructions, the difficulty is usually limited to accuracy and speed.

Complexity - LEVEL A: Work is a simple or routine nature requiring very little analytical thought. Tasks are clearly defined, highly organized, closely related and often repetitive. Few if any alternatives exist for methods or procedures to be used. Work is usually in the form of specific assignments and is closely reviewed for accuracy and progress. When guidelines exist at this level, they are usually detailed, easy-to-follow instructions that cover all or most of the important aspects of the work. Workers at this level can readily determine the actions which need to be taken.

Consequence of Actions or Decisions - LEVEL C: Consequences of actions or decisions at this level are limited in scope and effect as the work is reviewed occasionally. Errors may cause moderate inefficiency. Costs due to errors may be significant.

Contacts - LEVEL A: The purpose of the contact is to obtain, clarify, give or screen established factual information, regardless of the type (i.e., easily understood or technical) within a well-defined relationship. Normal communication skills are required.

Physical Demands - LEVEL C: The work requires moderate physical exertion.

Environmental Conditions - LEVEL C: The work environment involves hazards, risks or discomforts typical of working with or around machinery with exposed moving parts, irritant chemicals, heavy equipment or abusive or hostile clientele and patients. Exposure to disagreeable weather conditions and extreme levels of temperature, ventilation, lighting and sound are normal. Protective clothing or gear and specific safety standards or procedures may be required. Serious injury is possible.

Supervision/Leadership - LEVEL A: No supervisory or leadership responsibility; may explain work instructions or assist in training others.

Distinguishing Features

Differs from the Service Assistant class which is direct entry level work requiring only limited skills.

Differs from Laundry Supervisor class which is first line supervisory in nature.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Operates washers, tumbler dryers, flat work ironers, extractors, presses, and marking machines in order to process a variety of items including garments and linens.

Measures and portions detergents, bleaches and other laundry additives by hand, machine or computer.

Inspects, cleans, oils and adjusts equipment; may instruct others in the laundry procedures.

May sort clean or soiled laundry.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Knowledge

Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of machinery and equipment in an institutional laundry, including washers, extractors, dryers, flat work ironers, presses, marking machines, or other equipment.

Knowledge of the materials, methods, and practices used in cleaning operations.

Knowledge of common textiles and their reaction to soaps, bleaches, water temperatures, and machine washing.

Knowledge of occupational hazards in an institutional laundry and of necessary safety precautions.

Abilities

*Ability to work effectively with fellow workers and others.

*Ability to learn routine machine operations common to laundry work.

*Ability to learn and observe safety precautions required in laundry operations.

*Ability to work while standing and under conditions of high temperature and humidity.

*Ability to lift and carry heavy objects.

*Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.

Ability to operate, maintain and repair equipment used in an institutional laundry.

None required.

Necessary Special Requirements:

Some positions in this class require that at the time of appointment the selected candidate must take and pass a drug screening test approved by the Division of Personnel Services unless promoting, transferring, or demoting from another designated position within the same agency.

Some positions in this class may require a valid driver’s license.
