ARCHITECT I8251B1 Pay Grade: 25 DEFINITION OF WORK Summary This is professional architectural work encompassing the design, review and/or modification of buildings and facilities and the construction systems of large projects and may have final sign-off authority. Standard Classification Factors Supervision Received - LEVEL C: "Under direction " Employees at this level usually receive a general outline of the work to be performed and are generally free to develop their own sequences and methods within the scope of established policies. New, unusual, or complex work situations are almost always referred to a superior for advice. Work is periodically checked for progress and conformance to established policies and requirements. Difficulty - LEVEL C: Considerable Duties which require a high degree of concentration because of the many factors which must be considered and weighed before a decision can be reached. Usually positions that require planning, developing, and coordinating programs and directing fairly large groups of people fall into this category. Complexity - LEVEL D: Work is of a diversified nature that usually involves multiple unrelated steps. Analytical thought is necessary for dealing with complex data and situations. Work often involves a variety of unrelated processes and may require planning or carrying out a sequence of actions or both. Several alternatives usually exist at this level for approaching problems or situations. Workers at this level exercise a considerable amount of independent judgment. Work is controlled by occasional review and by reporting to or consultation with supervisors or superiors. When guidelines exist at this level, they are usually broadly defined or technical requiring careful analysis and interpretation. Consequence of Actions or Decisions - LEVEL C: Consequences of actions or decisions at this level are limited in scope and effect as the work is reviewed occasionally. Errors may cause moderate inefficiency. Costs due to errors may be significant. Contacts - LEVEL C: The purpose of the contact is to influence, motivate, conduct interviews, make formal presentations or counsel to achieve common understanding or solutions to problems when the information is sensitive in nature or the individuals or groups are skeptical or uncooperative. Communication techniques and well developed communication skills become an important requirement at this level. Physical Demands - LEVEL C: The work requires moderate physical exertion. Environmental Conditions - LEVEL C: The work environment involves hazards, risks or discomforts typical of working with or around machinery with exposed moving parts, irritant chemicals, heavy equipment or abusive or hostile clientele and patients. Exposure to disagreeable weather conditions and extreme levels of temperature, ventilation, lighting and sound are normal. Protective clothing or gear and specific safety standards or procedures may be required. Serious injury is possible. Supervision/Leadership - LEVEL A: No supervisory or leadership responsibility; may explain work instructions or assist in training others. Distinguishing Features Differs from the Architectural Project Designer class, which is technical work in architectural projects and is not on-the-job training to prepare incumbents for the professional architectural examination. Differs from the Architectural Intern class in which close review and supervision of the work by a licensed architect is required by law. Differs from the Architect II class which requires greater leadership and program responsibilities. EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED Consults with state agencies and assists with needs assessment and the preparation of building space programs including accurate budget estimates used as a basis for appropriating project funds. Prepares and supervises the preparation of design studies and solutions which conform with agency needs. Provides concurrent estimates of alternatives. Advises and consults with agency architects and engineers on layout and design of buildings and related systems and equipment in order to obtain the systems and performance required by the user agency. Researches, analyzes and selects appropriate building materials and construction systems which will meet program requirements. Designs buildings and building systems in order to complete cost estimates and the required schematic plans for the construction of complicated building facilities in connection with a variety of state construction projects. Prepares and directs the preparation of building construction documents, including drawings and specifications, for bid purposes in order to secure the best possible low bids. Conducts on-site study and measurements of existing conditions in and around state institutions and buildings for proposed repairs, replacements, or new installations and serves as consultant on such projects in order to obtain the desired result for the institution and within the scope of sound professional practice. Reviews preliminary and final plans and specifications prepared by consulting project architects for complex building projects in order to determine compliance with professional practices and established standards, codes, and regulations, and makes recommendations as to acceptance or revision. Participates in and assists with the training of the unlicensed staff as they seek to learn the required processes to become licensed architects. Reviews pay voucher submittals, writes change orders, maintains project correspondence files, checks shop drawings, accomplishes necessary field inspections and resolves field problems. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS Knowledge *Knowledge of methods and techniques of building construction and use of construction materials. Abilities *Ability to conduct field studies and surveys, take measurements and gather data required for drafting plans and specifications. *Ability to inspect the work of project contractors and to report deficiencies to approved plans and specifications. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and contractors. *Ability to design, make preliminary layouts, and prepare detailed architectural drawings and estimates. *Necessary at Entry MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Professional architecture license recognized by the Kansas Board of Technical Professions.
