HEALTH CARE TECHNICIAN I8302F1 Pay Grade: 18 DEFINITION OF WORK Summary This is technical work assisting professional staff in the diagnostic care, treatment and medical research of patients in a medical or institutional setting. Work involves preparing patients for medical testing; developing X-rays by operating darkroom equipment; stocking and organizing operating rooms with adequate instruments and supplies; tracking surgical instruments and supply counts during surgery and handing instruments as requested; participating in new surgical product and procedure evaluations; and providing orientation and instruction within work assignment area. Standard Classification Factors Supervision Received - LEVEL C: "Under direction " Employees at this level usually receive a general outline of the work to be performed and are generally free to develop their own sequences and methods within the scope of established policies. New, unusual, or complex work situations are almost always referred to a superior for advice. Work is periodically checked for progress and conformance to established policies and requirements. Difficulty - LEVEL B: Average Where the employee is confronted with a variety of duties susceptible to different methods of solution which, in turn, places a correspondingly higher demand upon resourcefulness and concentration. Positions which require the analysis and evaluation of raw data and the rendering of conclusions would, in many instances, fall into this category. Complexity - LEVEL B: Work is of a structured nature including duties that have several related steps. This level involves simple analysis of data, identification of easily distinguishable facts and recognition of differences in related situations. Workers at this level exercise limited independent judgment in determining methods or procedures to be used in making minor decisions. Work is normally controlled by frequent review and consultation with supervisors. When guidelines exist at this level, they are usually specific and aid in determining an approach to problems or situations. Workers at this level must be able to identify basic differences in situations to determine the actions which need to be taken. Consequence of Actions or Decisions - LEVEL C: Consequences of actions or decisions at this level are limited in scope and effect as the work is reviewed occasionally. Errors may cause moderate inefficiency. Costs due to errors may be significant. Contacts - LEVEL B: The purpose of the contact is to plan, coordinate and advise on work efforts, interpret guidelines or instructions, elicit opinions or give guidance on the basis of facts to resolve common issues or problems when the information is not sensitive in nature or the individuals or groups are working toward mutual goals and have basically cooperative attitudes. Well developed communication skills are required. Physical Demands - LEVEL D: The work requires considerable physical exertion. Environmental Conditions - LEVEL B: The work environment involves moderate hazards, risks or discomforts. Exposure to minor deviations from pleasant environmental conditions is normal. Minor to serious injuries are possible. Supervision/Leadership - LEVEL A: No supervisory or leadership responsibility; may explain work instructions or assist in training others. Distinguishing Features Differs from the Health Care Assistant class in which the incumbents perform routine, day-to-day patient care activities. Differs from the Health Care Technician II class in which the incumbents perform advanced technical work in a variety of specialized areas such as administering a specialized test, treatment procedure or function of patient care. EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED Provides psychological and physical comfort in preparing patients for a variety of specialized medical tests, procedures and treatments. Processes exposed X-ray film through the operation and maintenance of darkroom equipment; mixes and preserves processing solutions; operates duplicating subtraction and sensitometry equipment; instructs students and personnel in darkroom techniques. Suits, scrubs and assists in operating rooms by stocking the rooms with adequate surgical instruments and supplies; organizes the instruments and supplies for easy access to surgeons and surgery nurses; hands instruments to surgeons as requested; assists in cleaning operating rooms. Performs operating room procedures such as maintenance of asepsis, positioning, prepping and draping, needle count, instrument count, sponge count, specimen care and dressing application. Participates in evaluating new surgical products and procedures by examining product for improvements and reporting results and by experimenting in the organization of instruments for a new surgical procedure. Provides orientation and instruction within work assignment area to lower-level staff. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS Knowledge *Knowledge of the principles of patient care, such as first aid and ward housekeeping. Knowledge of medical instruments and equipment and their usage. Abilities *Ability to work with speed and accuracy in critical situations. *Ability to follow oral and written instructions in detail. *Ability to prepare records and reports. *Ability to maintain satisfactory relationships with other employees. *Ability to maintain a sympathetic attitude toward patients. *Ability to perform routine procedures accurately. *Necessary at Entry MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Six months of experience in direct care.
