DEFINITION OF WORK

Summary

This is skilled work operating a camera and developing plates for lithographic presses in the Division of Printing.

The work involves operating a camera for plate-making procedures and processing plates for lithographic presses. Work assignments are received in writing, or in the form of original drawings, Photostat copies, original photographs or reproductions of letterpress work. Work is performed in accordance with standard trade practices under general supervision.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Operates the camera used in the photo-mechanical plate-making process.

Reproduces copy by making line shots, half-tones and color separations.

Prepares layout sheets.

Develops negatives. Assembles negatives in appropriate form with the aid of a layout sheet. Paints out imperfections in negatives.

Coats plates according to type of job and length of run.

Uses vacuum frames to compress negative against plate.

Mixes chemicals used in various plate-making operations.

May perform illustrative work.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Knowledge

*Knowledge of standard practices, materials, processes, and equipment of the trade.

*Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

*Knowledge of elementary chemistry and arithmetic.

Abilities

*Ability to understand and carry out instructions and to produce satisfactory results without direct supervision.

Skills

*Skill in the operation of the specialized equipment used in making photographic plates.

*Necessary at Entry

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Two years of experience in prepress and/or relevant education in printing technology and/or completion of training as a Litho-Plateroom Apprentice.
