DEFINITION OF WORK Summary This is technical work in an audio-visual services program. Work involves the responsibility for providing audio-visual services by ensuring the proper distribution, operation, maintenance, and repair of a variety of projection, sound, computer for presentation and recording equipment. Work may include receiving, shipping, and servicing films and video software. Supervision may be exercised over a staff of student assistants. Standard Classification Factors Supervision Received - LEVEL B: "Under general supervision..." Employees working under general supervision usually receive some instructions with respect to the details of most assignments but are free to develop their own work sequences within established procedures, methods and policies. They are often physically removed from their supervisor and subject to only periodic checks. Difficulty - LEVEL A: Routine - Where the work is usually repetitive and the employee works from detailed instructions, the difficulty is usually limited to accuracy and speed. Complexity - LEVEL A: Work is of a simple or routine nature requiring very little analytical thought. Tasks are clearly defined, highly organized, closely related and often repetitive. Few if any alternatives exist for methods or procedures to be used. Work is usually in the form of specific assignments and is closely reviewed for accuracy and progress. When guidelines exist at this level, they are usually detailed, easy-to-follow instructions that cover all or most of the important aspects of the work. Workers at this level can readily determine the actions which need to be taken. Consequences of Actions and Decisions - LEVEL B: Consequences of actions or decisions at this level are minor as the work is normally reviewed regularly and errors are usually detected in following operations. Errors may be disruptive to co-workers or may cause minor inefficiency. Costs due to errors are minimal. Contacts - LEVEL A: The purpose of the contact is to obtain, clarify, give or screen established factual information, regardless of the type (i.e., easily understood or technical) within a well defined relationship. Normal communication skills are required. Physical Demands - LEVEL B: The work requires light physical exertion. The employee may be required to perform handling activities with lightweight or easily moved items (e.g. books, file folders, boxes of office supplies, small machine parts, etc.); perform moving activities for brief periods; operate light equipment; perform repetitive motions for brief periods; confined to a work area. Environmental Conditions - LEVEL A: The work environment involves normal everyday hazards or discomforts typical of offices, meeting and training rooms, or libraries. Comfortable levels of temperature, ventilation, lighting and sound are inherent in the work environment. Exposure to deviations from pleasant environmental conditions is only occasional. The likelihood of injury is remote. Supervision/Leadership - LEVEL A: No supervisory or leadership responsibility; may explain work instructions or assist in training others. Distinguishing Features Differs from the Public Programming/Performance Technician which involves the construction and maintenance of stage settings, lighting layouts and audio recordings. EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED Operates, maintains and trouble shoots a variety of projection, sound, and recording equipment, and services, ships, and receives film. Trains and supervises student assistants in the operation, maintenance, and minor repair of a variety of audio-visual equipment. Arranges schedules, and distributes equipment and personnel to classrooms; assists instructors in the selection of audio-visual materials for specific classes. Checks equipment in and out. Maintains records of film condition and makes recommendations concerning purchasing of replacement prints and replacement footage; makes recommendations for the purchase and replacement of audio-visual equipment. Performs related work as required. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS Knowledge *Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and minor repair of projection, sound, and recording equipment, and of the servicing of films. Abilities *Ability to make minor repairs to audio-visual equipment. Ability to train assistants in the operation, care, maintenance and minor repair of audio-visual equipment. *Ability to instruct others in the operation of projection equipment, cameras, and recorders. *Ability to maintain effective relationships with professional and nonprofessional employees, administrative officials, and the public. *Necessary at Entry MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: None required.
