Pay Grade:  20 21

DEFINITION OF WORK

Summary

This is highly skilled mechanical and electrical work performing the installation, maintenance, and repair of large tonnage refrigeration and air conditioning systems and related air handling equipment, which includes reciprocating, absorption and centrifugal A/C units and overseeing work of subordinate workers or those in training.

Classification Factors

Supervision Received - Level D: "Under general direction…" Employees at this level are usually in charge of a large and important organizational unit. They plan and carry out assignments with little supervision. They report regularly to a superior, usually by means of occasional conferences, to discuss work progress or new problems which require advice from above. This designation will pertain to classes with a high order of independence.

Difficulty - LEVEL C: Considerable… Duties which require a high degree of concentration because of the many factors which must be considered and weighed before a decision can be reached. Usually positions that require planning, developing, and coordinating programs and directing fairly large groups of people fall into this category.

Complexity - LEVEL C: Work is of a standardized nature that may involve a variety of duties. Analytical thought becomes more important at this level due to increased data and changing situations. Tasks usually have several steps, some of which may not be directly related. Alternatives may exist for processes or methods to be used in solving problems. Workers at this level exercise a moderate amount of independent judgment. Work is controlled by routine review and reporting to or consultation with supervisors. When guidelines exist at this level, they tend to be more complicated or technical in nature requiring careful interpretation.

Consequence of Actions or Decisions - LEVEL C: Consequences of actions or decisions at this level are limited in scope and effect as the work is reviewed occasionally. Errors may cause moderate inefficiency. Costs due to errors may be significant.

Contacts - LEVEL A: The purpose of the contact is to obtain, clarify, give or screen established factual information, regardless of the type (i.e., easily understood or technical) within a well-defined relationship. Normal communication skills are required.

Physical Demands - LEVEL C: The work requires moderate physical exertion.

Environmental Conditions - LEVEL B: The work environment involves moderate hazards, risks or discomforts. Exposure to minor deviations from pleasant environmental conditions is normal. Minor to serious injuries are possible.

Supervision/Leadership - LEVEL B: Involves functional leadership responsibility. As a "senior worker", performing essentially the same or similar work as those overseen, responsibility includes training, instructing, scheduling and reviewing. As a "project leader" may be responsible for a phase(s) of a single project which includes planning, coordinating and reviewing the work of others. This level may also involve limited administrative responsibility such as participating in the evaluation of work performance.

Distinguishing Features

Differs from the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Service Technician class in which full performance knowledge of reciprocating, absorption and centrifugal A/C systems is not expected. Higher level classes are supervisory or multi-skilled.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Installs and monitors refrigeration and air conditioning equipment according to building design specification, blueprints and schematic diagrams. Cuts, bends, welds, etc., in order to connect tubing and refrigerant lines. Installs and maintains electronic controls. Checks ohms, amperage, and voltages on equipment. Lays out piping systems for air conditioning systems using mechanical drawings or rough sketches.

Performs start-ups, monitors daily operation and tests refrigeration equipment operations. Adjusts and maintains related equipment such as pumps, humidifiers, water coolers, filters, valves, cooling towers, coils, etc. Lubricates machinery, flushes and recharges systems with refrigerant, examines equipment for defects, leaks or faulty compressors, determines cause of problems and makes repairs on all types of machines from window units to large tonnage machines such as absorption and centrifugal machines.

Answers trouble calls for requested repairs on equipment such as leaks, defects, condensers, compressor and HVAC units. Treats condensing water with proper chemicals, when necessary, utilizing appropriate testing equipment.

Disassembles, repairs and reassembles air conditioners, compressors, chillers, etc. Also maintains inventory of items used in repair and maintenance work. Keeps records and maintains operating file on machine information as needed for proper service and maintenance.

Occasionally supervises lesser skilled workers in routine maintenance of equipment and project work. Performs duties as assigned or needed for proper departmental operation.
