LICENSED PRACTICAL NURSE7111F2 Pay Grade: 18 19 DEFINITION OF WORK Summary This is practical nursing work in the care and treatment of the physically ill, mentally ill, emotionally disturbed and/or developmentally disabled. Standard Classification Factors Supervision Received - LEVEL B: "Under general supervision…" Employees working under general supervision usually receive some instructions with respect to the details of most assignments but are free to develop their own work sequences within established procedures, methods and policies. They are often physically removed from their supervisor and subject to only periodic checks. Difficulty - LEVEL B: Average… Where the employee is confronted with a variety of duties susceptible to different methods of solution which, in turn, places a correspondingly higher demand upon resourcefulness and concentration. Positions which require the analysis and evaluation of raw data and the rendering of conclusions would, in many instances, fall into this category. Complexity - LEVEL C: Work is of a standardized nature that may involve a variety of duties. Analytical thought becomes more important at this level due to increased data and changing situations. Tasks usually have several steps, some of which may not be directly related. Alternatives may exist for processes or methods to be used in solving problems. Workers at this level exercise a moderate amount of independent judgment. Work is controlled by routine review and reporting to or consultation with supervisors. When guidelines exist at this level, they tend to be more complicated or technical in nature requiring careful interpretation. Consequence of Actions or Decisions - LEVEL D: Consequences of actions or decisions at this level are significant as the work may be rarely if ever reviewed, making errors difficult to detect. Errors may cause major program failure or a high degree of confusion. Injuries to others due to errors are serious or incapacitating or both and costs due to errors are substantial. Contacts - LEVEL B: The purpose of the contact is to plan, coordinate and advise on work efforts, interpret guidelines or instructions, elicit opinions or give guidance on the basis of facts to resolve common issues or problems when the information is not sensitive in nature or the individuals or groups are working toward mutual goals and have basically cooperative attitudes. Well developed communication skills are required. Physical Demands - LEVEL D: The work requires considerable physical exertion. Environmental Conditions - LEVEL C: The work environment involves hazards, risks or discomforts typical of working with or around machinery with exposed moving parts, irritant chemicals, heavy equipment or abusive or hostile clientele and individuals. Exposure to disagreeable weather conditions and extreme levels of temperature, ventilation, lighting and sound are normal. Protective clothing or gear and specific safety standards or procedures may be required. Serious injury is possible. Supervision/Leadership - LEVEL A: No supervisory or leadership responsibility; may explain work instructions or assist in training others. Distinguishing Features Differs from the Registered Nurse class series and the Public Health Nurse class series which provide for professional level nursing work. EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED Takes and records individuals' temperature, pulse and respiration; prepares and applies simple dressings; monitors/records vital signs regarding individual's physical and mental condition; measures and records individual intake and output of foods and fluids. Gives baths; makes beds and changes linens; administers light body massage. Administers medications, gives injections, observes and reports on the progress of intravenous fluids and medications. Irrigates colostomies, gastrostomy tubes, and tracheotomies; catheterizes individuals and administers enemas; operates gastric suction equipment; observes medical monitors; administers special treatments and enteral feedings. Prepares for surgery by setting up supplies and equipment; serves as scrub nurse gowning and gloving doctor and transferring instruments as requested. Provides first aid in case of emergencies; performs basic services such as treating minor illnesses and injuries. Admits individuals; charts individual activities and progress; escorts individuals to off grounds appointments; dismisses individuals in accordance with agency policies; assists in sick call, and make rounds. Transcribes physician orders; completes nursing care plan. Gives instructions and/or demonstrates use of equipment to clientele. Carries out physician orders for nursing care according to accepted nursing standards and agency policies and procedures. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS Knowledge *Knowledge of practical nursing theory and practice. *Knowledge of accreditation standards and regulations. *Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws. Abilities Ability to maintain a helpful and sympathetic attitude toward patients, and to maintain harmonious working relationships with employees. *Ability to apply nursing techniques as assigned by physicians or professional nurses. *Ability to follow verbal and written directions, and to prepare and maintain records, charts, and reports. *Ability to follow established policies and procedures. *Ability to respond to individual needs in emergencies or life threatening situations. *Necessary at Entry MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Eligible to be licensed as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the State of Kansas.
