DEFINITION OF WORK
Summary
This is specialized, professional work planning, organizing and carrying out habilitation, goal directed treatment or rehabilitation, or socialization activities with individuals. in a clinical setting to patients, clients, students or inmates.
Work involves the application of specialized activity/therapy skills and/or equipment professional therapeutic skills in a music, art, horticultureal, athletic, vocational or recreational or activities of daily living program. program in a community, institutional or correctional facility.
Standard Classification Factors
Supervision Received - LEVEL B: "Under general supervision…" Employees working under general supervision usually receive some instructions with respect to the details of most assignments but are free to develop their own work sequences within established procedures, methods and policies. They are often physically removed from their supervisor and subject to only periodic checks.
Difficulty - LEVEL B: Average… Where the employee is confronted with a variety of duties susceptible to different methods of solution which, in turn, places a correspondingly higher demand upon resourcefulness and concentration. Positions which require the analysis and evaluation of raw data and the rendering of conclusions would, in many instances, fall into this category.
Complexity - LEVEL D: Work is of a diversified nature that usually involves multiple unrelated steps. Analytical thought is necessary for dealing with complex data and situations. Work often involves a variety of unrelated processes and may require planning or carrying out a sequence of actions or both. Several alternatives usually exist at this level for approaching problems or situations. Workers at this level exercise a considerable amount of independent judgment. Work is controlled by occasional review and by reporting to or consultation with supervisors or superiors. When guidelines exist at this level, they are usually broadly defined or technical requiring careful analysis and interpretation.
Consequence of Actions or Decisions - LEVEL D: Consequences of actions or decisions at this level are significant as the work may be rarely if ever reviewed, making errors difficult to detect. Errors may cause major program failure or a high degree of confusion. Injuries to others due to errors are serious or incapacitating or both and costs due to errors are substantial.
Contacts - LEVEL C: The purpose of the contact is to influence, motivate, conduct interviews, make formal presentations or counsel to achieve common understanding or solutions to problems when the information is sensitive in nature or the individuals or groups are skeptical or uncooperative. Communication techniques and well developed communication skills become an important requirement at this level.
Physical Demands - LEVEL D: The work requires considerable physical exertion.
Environmental Conditions - LEVEL B: The work environment involves moderate hazards, risks or discomforts. Exposure to minor deviations from pleasant environmental conditions is normal. Minor to serious injuries are possible.
Supervision/Leadership - LEVEL B: Involves functional leadership responsibility. As a "senior worker", performing essentially the same or similar work as those overseen, responsibility includes training, instructing, scheduling and reviewing. As a "project leader" may be responsible for a phase(s) of a single project which includes planning, coordinating and reviewing the work of others. This level may also involve limited administrative responsibility such as participating in the evaluation of work performance.
Distinguishing Features
Differs from the Activity Therapy Technician class which is paraprofessional work assisting in the development and implementation of a therapeutic program of mental, physical, and expressive activities for individuals in a state operated treatment center.
Differs from the Activity Therapist II class which is supervisory work planning, organizing, and carrying out a variety of habilitative or rehabilitative activities for individuals or directing and managing all aspects of a facility's habilitative, rehabilitative, or recreation program.
Differs from the Activity Therapist II class which supervises lower level
activity therapist or works with a variety of activity specialties.
Differs from the Activity Specialist which does not function in a clinical
capacity as a member of the clinical treatment team.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
Plans and carries out specialized therapeutic/habilitative/rehabilitative recreational, educational, vocational, athletic, religious, or social activities; may assists a higher level activity therapist in planning and carrying out specialized or facility-wide activities. in support of an overall therapeutic plan.
Conducts and interprets activity therapy assessments to determine needs; in a clinical setting; makes recommendations for activity components of individual therapeutic plan; assessment to determine conducts and interprets activity assessments to determine needs, assets, capabilities, and interests; writes treatment/habilitation or rehabilitation goals and objectives; evaluates and documents participant acceptance and progress; demonstrates activities and encourages individuals to participate.

Demonstrates the principles and techniques of a therapy/activity specialty to students, volunteers and other staff. Develops and presents training in the specialty area. May supervise paraprofessional, technical or clerical staff.
Monitors and maintains supplies and equipment; maintains inventory records; completes purchase requests and work orders; assists in budget planning.
Drives van or bus to transport individuals to activities.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS
Knowledge
*Knowledge of the methods and techniques of music, art, horticultural, or athletic, recreational habilitative, rehabilitative or socialization activities. therapy.
Knowledge of security factors in dealing with adult or juvenile offenders.
Knowledge of modern concepts, assistive technologies, principles and practices related to dealing with the habilitation or rehabilitation of juvenile or adult offenders.
Knowledge of relevant facility handbooks, policies, procedures, regulations and statutes.

*Ability to evaluate condition of client, patient, student or inmate in relation to available activities and to establish an appropriate habilitation or rehabilitation program.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's degree and jJob knowledge at an entry level in activity development or activity therapy.
