There are some nuances of Continuous vs Intermittent FMLA Leave, particularly in regard to an employee's call-in procedure.

Call-In Procedures -

If an employee is approved for FMLA taken in a continuous block of time, they are NOT required to follow the typical "call-in" procedure each day they are absent. The full extent and date range of their absence will be made clear by HR based on their FMLA paperwork. (ex: pregnancy)

If an employee is approved for FMLA taken intermittently, they ARE required to follow the typical "call-in" procedure each day they are absent. (ex: physical therapy, illness, etc.)

Continuous vs Intermittent FMLA Leave

Note on Intermittent Call-Ins -

Always clarify with an employee whether their absence is for FMLA after they are approved for intermittent leave. You don't need details, you can simply ask - "Is this for FMLA?"
